2016 How to Enter

For 2016 we have fourteen ‘Product Categories’ and eight ‘Taste Champion Categories’ which are all expertly judged by a panel of local foodies, chefs and celebrities – only the best of the bites get through.

The finalists will be announced in August and the winners revealed at our awards ceremony on Wednesday 2nd November at Pavilions of Harrogate.

Product Categoriesproductcategories

  • Best “Free From” Product
  • Best Bakery Product (bread, cakes, biscuits and puddings)
  • Best Fresh Produce (fresh vegetables salads, fruit and herbs)
  • Best Fresh Meat (fresh cuts and joints of meat including game)
  • Best Prepared Meat (prepared meat products including sausages, meatballs and charcuterie)
  • Best Yorkshire Pork Pie (It doesn’t get much more Yorkshire than this!)
  • Best Fish and Seafood
  • Best Ready to Eat Product (crisps, ready meals, pies, snack products)
  • Best Cheese
  • Best Ice Cream (Including sorbets and frozen yoghurt)
  • Best Drink (with individual awards for Best Beer, Best Wine (NEW! for 2016), Best Spirit and Best Beverage)
  • Best Savoury Condiment
  • Best Sweet Preserve
  • Best Confectionery (chocolate and sweets)

All products entered in the product categories are rigorously tested by our expert judges. You may enter multiple categories and several products in each category.
All products will be first be blind tasted then judged on the suitability and design of packaging where applicable. All blind tastings will be and marked on appearance, aroma, taste and texture.

Best New BusinessSarah and Phillipa

This category is eligible for all businesses who have commenced trading since 1st January 2015.

Judges will be looking for a stand out business that has made impact since its launch.

Entrants in the New Business will need to show evidence of the following… – Their story so far – Their company mission – Evidence of innovation – Successes to date – Their vision for the future

Any type of business (producer, wholesaler, retail and hospitality) can enter this category – and will be judged by online entries only.

Best Yorkshire Breakfastproductcategories

This very popular category will be judged on the following evidence provided:

  1. Communication of provenance (menus, website etc)
  2. Evidence of local sourcing (supplier list)
  3. Great customer service (customer reviews, testimonials etc)
  4. Company Mission (Tell us why you think providing customers with a locally sourced breakfast is so important)

A shortlist of entrants will be visited for judging of the quality and presentation of the breakfast, staff knowledge and customer experience.

Best use of Local Produce on a Menu (Hotel/Restaurant)productcategories

Awarded to the establishment that most can clearly demonstrate their commitment to using regional produce. This category will be judged on the following:

  1. Communication of provenance (menus, website etc)
  2. Evidence of local sourcing (menu, suppliers list, special menus)
  3. Great Customer Service (customer reviews, testimonials, proof of going the extra mile)
  4. Effective marketing (press clippings, other awards won, special events/menus, loyalty schemes etc)
  5. Company Mission (Tell the judges what is most important to your business)

A shortlist of entrants will be visited for judging of the quality and presentation of the menu, staff knowledge and customer experience.

Best Yorkshire Afternoon Teaproductcategories

This will be awarded to the establishment that most can clearly demonstrate their commitment to using regional produce on their Afternoon Tea menu. This category will be judged on the following:

  1. Communication of provenance (menus, website etc)
  2. Evidence of local sourcing (menu, suppliers list)
  3. Great Customer Service (customer reviews, testimonials, proof of going the extra mile)
  4. That something special (Tell the judges what makes your Yorkshire afternoon tea great/ different from the rest)

A shortlist of entrants will be visited for judging of the quality and presentation of the menu, staff knowledge and customer experience.

Best Independent Retailer of Local Produceproductcategories

Awarded to the retailer most able to demonstrate the following:

  1. Communication of provenance (effective point of sale, shelf talkers etc )
  2. Evidence of local sourcing (supplier list)
  3. Great Customer Service (customer reviews, testimonials, proof of going the extra mile)
  4. Effective marketing (website, press clippings, other awards won, special events, loyalty schemes, recipes etc)
  5. Company Mission (tell the judges what is most important to your business

A shortlist of entrants will be visited by a mystery shopper, once paper evidence has been judged.

Local Food HeroJeremy and Louise Holmes

We’re asking all awards entrant to nominate their favourite local food personality for this award which celebrates those who go the extra mile and are truly committed to Yorkshire food and drink.

Nominate someone you work with, a supplier, customer or just someone who you think deserves some recognition for all their hard work.

The winner will be the local food personality with the most nominations.

Supreme Product Awardproductcategories

The Supreme Product award is the winners’ winner! The winners from each product category go forward for final judging in front of a group of discerning judges to find the best one overall.
