Networks and Innovation Funding Available in Yorkshire

Food Innovation Network (FIN)

The FIN’s primary objective is to tackle the issues which are currently impeding innovation, productivity and growth in the UK Agri-food & drink businesses.  The FIN will join-up and improve access to the right information, research, skills, expertise and different funding mechanisms.  By doing this the FIN will help the sector to increase its effectiveness and profitability, thereby contributing to the Governments long-term plan for food and farming i.e. to make the UK one of the world’s leading food nations. As an example FIN will be working closely with the team running the SIAFS project (info below).

DEFRA – along with partners the York, North Yorkshire and East Riding Enterprise Partnership and the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) – appointed the Knowledge Transfer Network as the coordinator of the project.  Whilst this is a national programme it is envisaged that Yorkshire based businesses will benefit particularly from this initiative.

Stimulating Innovation in the Agri-food Sector (SIAFS)

SIAFS is a fully funded project which aims to assist small to medium sized agri-food business across North, West and East Yorkshire.  It is designed to stimulate innovation through one on one advice, a series of masterclasses, workshops and networking events.  Additionally there is an opportunity to have work carried out with FERA Science Ltd through a voucher innovation scheme.  Vouchers are currently for 2K or 5K and can be used for things such as food testing services, risk identification services and agri-food research.  The project is being funded by the European Regional Development Agency.

Innovation is defined simply as altering and updating elements of your business in order to improve productivity and sales.  This can be anything from altering your packaging to exporting products to creating something brand new.

The project aims to help you:

  • Make improvements on production, staff development, packaging, techniques, logistics, technologies and marketing so that your business can grow.
  • Improve sales, find new markets and give your business an edge
  • Develop an idea for a new product or technology
  • Meet the needs and trends of consumers, or create a new trend
