SeaGrown Wins ‘Outstanding Sustainability Contribution’ Award

The team at an innovative Scarborough based seaweed cultivation business are celebrating after winning an Outstanding Sustainability Contribution Award.

SeaGrown were presented with the prestigious accolade as part of the Maritime Innovation Week’s inaugural awards, which aim to celebrate achievements in technology, engineering, sustainability, skills, and community impact within the UK maritime sector.

Hosted by the Port of Tyne’s 2050 Innovation Hub, the event took place in Newcastle and London and culminated in awards for several companies from across the country.

Presented by Grant Brown from Hitachi Europe to SeaGrown’s Directors Captain Wave Crookes and Professor Laura Robinson, it recognised their innovative Kelpedo™ offshore cultivation system which actively restores the marine environment by sequestering carbon, cleaning the water, and creating a vital, complex habitat for marine life.

SeaGrown Co-Founder and Operations Director, Wave Crookes, said: “We were honoured to be part of the conversation, but we were even more thrilled to bring something home.

“For us, this award is a validation of our core belief. That nature itself is the best technology we have.

“Real innovation isn’t just about building smarter ships, it’s about rethinking our relationship with the ocean. At SeaGrown, we stopped trying to conquer the North Sea and started working with it. This award is a huge vote of confidence, not just for our Kelpedo™ technology, but for the idea that nature-based solutions belong at the very heart of the UK’s maritime masterplan.”
