The Orange Bird is a neighbourhood kitchen in Hillsborough, Sheffield S6, owned and run by Anne Horner and chef Matthew Duggan-Jones. We opened in November 2020 — in the middle of the second national lockdown. People said we were mad. We opened here because this is where we live. It is our community.

We have no investors. We know our neighbours. We are friends with our regulars. We are both here for every service and we care about the details — the food, the service, the music, the vibes.

The food is South African-inspired, rooted in Matt’s upbringing in Johannesburg. South Africa is not a culinary reference for him — it is home, family, and memory. He cooks food for people to eat — delicious above everything else. He will change something again and again until he is happy. He is never happy.

Our name comes from a scene in The Green Book. The Orange Bird is the better venue — the authentic place, the one where everyone is welcome. That is what we set out to be.
