A collaborative product, created by two award-winning dairy businesses in the region has been awarded the Supreme Champion Cheese accolade at this year’s Great Yorkshire Show.
Organic Yorkshire Blue made by Thirsk based Shepherds Purse using milk from Acorn Dairy near Darlington, took home the top prize from the four-day event despite stiff competition from across the UK.
The new cheese, which was only launched earlier this year, was also awarded Best Organic Product in Show and Best Yorkshire Product In Show alongside a host of other gold, silver and bronze medals across their artisan range.
Their first organic product, the new cheese has been several years in the making and was created as a result of both families’ shared vision of health and farming sustainably.
The resulting cheese is creamy, sweet and mild in flavour. Handmade and matured over a minimum of eight weeks, it’s turned by hand by their skilled team to achieve its blue veining and smooth texture.
Shepherds Purse Director Caroline Bell said: “We’re delighted with the results from this year’s Great Yorkshire Show and really pleased that our newest cheese has taken home the top prize.”
The Show also saw fellow Yorkshire producers, Stamfrey Farm, Cryer & Stott, Lacey´s Cheese Ltd, St Helen´s Farm and Ryeburn of Helmsley take home medals across a range of cheese, yoghurt and ice cream categories.
