Whitby Distillery unveil exciting new plans

Whitby Distillery has officially begun work on a new distillery and visitor centre, just a short walk from Whitby Abbey.

Founded in 2017 by Jessica Slater and Luke Pentith, the exciting new development, which represents one of the most significant tourism investments in Whitby in recent years, will be set within two restored 19th-century barns at Abbey Lands Farm.

The project will offer visitors behind-the-scenes tours, along with a tasting lounge overlooking the town, on-site bottle shop and curated local goods and the opportunity to wander through the new Spirits Walkway, a botanical garden featuring the coastal plants used in their products.

The space, which will open in late 2026 will combine heritage architecture with a modern, immersive visitor experience, blending craftsmanship, sustainability and storytelling.

Co-founder Jess said: “We’ve always wanted to create a place people don’t just pop into but connect with.  This isn’t a just distillery, it’s a space to slow down, experience the coast, and understand what makes Whitby Gin so unique.”

Combining thoughtful design and sustainably, the stone barns have stood empty since 1998 and the team have partnered with Native Architects and Oak Construction to restore them with a low carbon approach, utilising reclaimed materials, heat recovery systems and wildflower green roofs.

Luke adds: “We’re building something that will look like it has been here 100 years and to last the next.  They’ve waited a long time for a new chapter, and we’re honoured to be writing it. We can’t wait to open the doors.”
