Keelham butcher duo on the run for charity

Two young apprentice butchers from Keelham Farm Shop in Thornton are going on the run this week, but it’s all perfectly legal and above board!

Kyle Mottram, aged 21, of Haworth, and 25-year-old Andrew Scholes, of Wibsey, are taking to the track at Wetherby Racecourse, on Thursday (May 31) to run in a fancy dress race for mascots ““ at the same time whipping in cash for charity.

The duo will don “Beefy and Lamby” costumes ““ based on cricketing legends Sir Ian Botham and Allan Lamb, who have become inseparabale over the years in helping to promote British lamb and beef.

They will be among the competitors in the seventh running of the Mascot Gold Cup, rearranged from last month when Wetherby Races was called off due to waterlogging.

Proceeds are again in aid of Sue Ryder Care, who organise the event in association with the Yorkshire Federation of Young Farmers Clubs.

Keelham Farm Shop is raising money for its local Sue Ryder Manorlands Hospice at Oxenhope, which provides long term and palliative care for those with terminal illnesses.

The Brighouse & Denholme Road shop also staged other fund-raising events throughout April in aid of Manorlands, with Lamby and Beefy making pre-race guest appearances in the shop, handing out free balloons and carrying collection buckets to help swell the charity kitty.

Kyle, chosen as one of three British contenders for the International Young Butcher competition in Holland in September, will be making his second appearance in the Mascot Gold Cup. Last year, he secured over £1,000 in sponsorship, which earned him a special award for the mascot raising the most money. Kyle says he is now hard in training in a bid to be placed in the first three at this year’s renewal!

Collection buckets are available at Keelham Farm Shop. Co-owner and director Victoria Robertshaw said: “We are hopeful that Kyle and Andrew will run the races of their lives and help raise a new record amount money for Manorlands.

“Our customers are extremely generous when it comes to supporting our ongoing fund-raising efforts and we trust we will be on yet another winner in the Mascot Gold Cup!
