Luke’s Big ‘Dough-nation’ Returns to Reward Local Heroes

An East Yorkshire charity was left “dough-lighted” after receiving a delivery of fresh sourdough from Luke’s Bakery to mark the end of Sourdough September.

Mires Beck Nursery, near Brough, was named the winner of the bakery’s Big “Dough-nation”, which returned for a second year to recognise organisations making a difference in their communities.

Bakery founder Luke Jenneson personally delivered the loaves on Wednesday 30 September, rounding off a month celebrating sourdough with a thank you to the charity.

Based in North Cave, Mires Beck provides day services and horticultural work experience for adults with learning disabilities. Its working nursery gives people opportunities to develop skills through growing and caring for plants.

The campaign invited nominations for charities, community groups, public service teams and voluntary organisations across Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire, with Luke and his team choosing the recipient.

Speaking about the initiative, Luke said: “2025’s Big Dough-nation was one of the highlights of our year here at the bakery, so of course we had to bring it back, this time for Sourdough September.

“We’re a proud Yorkshire business and always looking for ways to give back to our community.”

Founded in 2022, award-winning Luke’s Bakery supplies shops, homes and hospitality venues across Yorkshire and Lincolnshire. Trained at Le Cordon Bleu, Luke built the business around sourdough made using simple, local ingredients.

The delivery offered a fitting way to celebrate the people behind Mires Beck’s work, with bread to share over breakfast, a tea and toast break or a round of sandwiches.
