Scarborough based supermarket group Proudfoot’s are celebrating after their Newby store was named Independent Retailer of the Year (over 6,000sq ft) at the 2025 Retail Industry Awards recently.
Over the past 12 months, the store has undergone a complete transformation following a full refit which was completed in early 2025. Key developments have included a new larger butchery, expanded Co-op own brand range, extended chiller and soft drinks sections with new carbon-neutral, energy-efficient chillers, a greater emphasis on food-to-go, including new hot food options, as well as refreshed flooring and shelving to enhance the overall store experience for customers.
Celebrating their 30th anniversary this year, the Retail Industry Awards, which took place in late September at the Royal Lancaster Hotel in London, are an annual celebration of excellence, innovation, and community spirit within UK grocery retail.
Valerie Aston, co-director of the Proudfoot Group said: “The results speak for themselves – stronger sales, increased footfall and fantastic customer feedback. The judges described the store as “phenomenal” and praised the refit saying “It looked good before, but now it’s just brilliant.
“A huge congratulations to all the Proudfoot team on this well-deserved recognition and for continuing to raise the bar in independent retailing.”
Family-owned Proudfoot’s have been operating within the town for over 70 years and are a staple of the Scarborough high street stocking and supporting many local businesses on their shelves.
The award-winning independent business, run five stores in total, situated around the Scarborough area in the Newby, Eastfield and Seamer districts.
