Proudfoot Newby store acknowledged for dedication to community

Local independent retailer the Proudfoot Group is being acknowledged this month with £1,000 to donate to local causes after being nominated by a customer for its dedication to the community. The group’s Newby supermarket on Scalby Road won one of 15 prizes in Nisa’s competition to recognise the UK’s best independent community retailers.

Last month retail organisation Nisa launched its Shop Local campaign to celebrate the key role its independent retailers play at the heart of their communities. As part of this campaign a competition was launched encouraging consumers to nominate their favourite local Nisa store, for the chance to win the store £1,000 to be donated to local causes through Nisa’s charity, Making a Difference Locally.

Newby Flower Baskets 5 (3)The competition received over 140 entries and some fantastic nominations from customers wishing to recognise the community value of their local store. Proudfoot Newby was selected from these entries upon receiving the following nomination from a local resident:

“They always have great offers on, and the staff are friendly and helpful and have worked there for years so you are always greeted warmly by them. The company has been in the same family for more than fifty years and they are always striving to keep things up to date but user friendly. I’ve shopped there for thirty years and I get the majority of my week’s shopping from there. Even my son-in-law is a convert!”

The Proudfoot Group will be donating the £1,000 to Newby and Scalby Library to help with running costs, as council funding for the library is due to end in April next year.

Valerie Aston, Buying and Distribution Controller for the Proudfoot Group, commented: “This is wonderful news and it is so nice to hear how much our customers appreciate the Newby store and the very helpful staff that work there. Customers always speaks very highly of our stores, and the efforts of all our staff are much appreciated so it is brilliant for our Newby staff to receive this well-deserved acknowledgement.

Kate Carroll, charity manager for Making a Difference Locally, commented: “The Shop Local campaign was designed to recognise the valuable contribution independent retailers make to their local communities and we were overwhelmed by the fantastic response we had to the competition from consumers across the UK.

“The nominations reflect the many ways in which these stores support their communities and we are delighted to be able to reward them with a £1,000 donation that will be used to support even more good causes in their community.”

Proudfoot Newby is actively involved in the local community and regularly makes donations through Nisa’s Making a Difference Locally charity. To date the store has donated over £14,000 to around 35 local causes.

Earlier this year The Proudfoot Group were also awarded the title of ‘Making a Difference Locally Community Champion’ for their commitment to the local community.
