Proudfoot supermarkets to support four local causes with money raised from carrier bags

Scarborough-based supermarket chain The Proudfoot Group are supporting four local good causes this year with donations of £2,500 to each, raised solely from the sale of 5p single-use carrier bags.

The Proudfoot Group, who operate five stores in the Scarborough area, have already donated £20,000 to local causes with funds raised through the mandatory charge, and presented their first donation of the year to YMCA Scarborough at a meeting of the trustees on 25th January, to help with running costs.

YMCA Scarborough has been supporting local people for 172 years by providing opportunities to learn new skills, gain experience and develop confidence. Current activities offered include fencing, Ju Jitsu, teen girls’ basketball, youth club, Krashlabs Minecraft sessions, performing arts, technical theatre, dance and volunteering; with over 1,000 sessions held in 2017, attended by over 10,000 people.

Steve Marsh, Executive Director of YMCA Scarborough said of the donation: “It is a great boost to have the backing of a forward-thinking organisation who recognise the value of our work, and having the support of a respected local company like the Proudfoot Group means such a lot to us.

“We are responsible for raising all of the funds needed to carry out our work with local people, and this donation will be a huge help.”

Valerie Aston, Director at the Proudfoot Group, added: “We have had really positive feedback from our customers who were happy to pay 5p for a carrier bag, knowing that the funds would be going to such worthy and much-loved local charities. We hope the funds will go some way to support the YMCA in the work they undertake.”
