RIVERFORD WINS IN SOIL ASSOCIATION ORGANIC FOOD AWARDS 2012

Two major Northern suppliers to Riverford have triumphed in this year’s Soil Association Organic Food Awards.

Acorn Dairy, which supplies milk for Riverford’s vegboxes produced at its Home Farm, near Newby Wiske, took the title of ‘Best Organic Dairy’ in the prestigious annual awards.

The winner of the egg category was Piercebridge Farm which supplies organic free range eggs for Home Farm’s vegboxes. Both Acorn and Piercebridge are based near Darlington.

Mark Smith, general manager at Home Farm, said: “These awards are a great testament to the quality of the produce supplied to us by both Acorn and Piercebridge, demonstrating our commitment to flavour which is fundamental to everything we produce for our vegbox customers. Both products also offer great value for money and delivery is free.”

Riverford’s homity pie was a joint winner in the pies, pizzas and pasties category, with its beef pasty highly commended. Riverford’s crème fraîche was highly commended in the dairy category.

Announced as part of this year’s Organic September and now in their 24th year, the Soil Association Organic Food Awards recognise the highest quality organic food and drink.

Finn Cottle, Soil Association certification trade consultant, said: “These awards showcase the best of organic food and drink and the high quality of products within this market. As the organic market returns to growth, this is a great time to encourage wider availability of these products so that more people can enjoy them.”
