Shaw’s celebrate 130 years

A West Yorkshire preserve company are preparing to celebrate their 130th birthday this September.

Huddersfield based Shaws are one of the UK’s oldest family-owned food producers and have been creating their popular range of award-winning chutneys, salsas and relishes since 1889

Founded by George Shaw, in Fitzwilliam Street as a general merchants and chemists along with his two sons, the company originally produced a very diverse range of products including face creams, baking powder, marrowfat peas and vinegar before settling into producing their vast array of preserves.

Five generations of the Shaw family have since worked for the firm which they continue to make in Huddersfield’s Storths Mill, the former Victorian wool mill that they moved into back in 1913.

Shaws now enjoy national listings with retailers including Morrisons, as well as stocking outlets throughout the region and the 6th generation of the family, Annie Shaw has recently joined the business to continue the family’s work.

Shaws MD Jan Docker said: “This is a year of both looking back and forward. September will not only be a celebration of 130 years of resourceful survival by our forefathers, through some of modern history’s most turbulent times, but after six years of honing ranges, redesigning branding, curating original recipes and developing new ones, it’s also a celebration of having arrived today at a selection of exceptional chutneys and relishes across two ranges that we are immensely proud of.

Shaws range of preserves are available at Morrisons supermarkets and throughout the region at a number of independent retailers.  For more information visit www.shaws1889.com
