SMOKIN’! DELICIOUSLYORKSHIRE JUDGES HAVE HOT SPOT FOR EAST YORKSHIRE SMOKEHOUSE

Staal Smokehouse proved to be hot stuff at the Deliciouslyorkshire awards ““ netting a ‘Best Fish’ award for its Hot Smoked Trout.

The Long Riston smokehouse, set up by Justin Staal and wife Georgina three years ago, was whittled down from hundreds of entries, undergoing blind tastings and rigorous judging to win the top prize for its trout, which is sourced from Star Carr Trout Farm before being dry cured with sea salt and dark molasses sugar and lightly oak smoked in Staal’s bespoke, locally made kiln.

“It was a lovely shock to win the Best Fish prize, especially when there were so many other worthy contenders,” said Justin Staal. “We feel very proud ““ and it’s been an amazing few years for us.”

Indeed, the Deliciouslyorkshire Award is not the first for Staal’s smoked fish products; its Oak Smoked Salmon scooped a gold star from the Great Taste Awards judges in August and a ‘Remarkable Fayre’ award in the 2013 Remarkable East Yorkshire Tourism Awards.

Twenty businesses across North, South, East and West Yorkshire received prizes at a glittering Deliciouslyorkshire Awards ceremony on Wednesday, which took place at the National Railway Museum.
