The Chilli Jam Man now has a sweet side

A York-based food producer is launching a new online business this weekend aimed at those with a sweet tooth.

Simon Barrett, aka The Chilli Jam Man who is best known for his range of award-winning chilli-based preserves will officially launch Candy Mouth at this weekend’s York Food Festival.

The new company will feature retro pick and mix pouches available in different sizes, as well as personalised jars and customers will have the option to create their own personalised mixes for gifts.

Simon said: “Like most of the nation during lockdown, myself and my wife Bonita ate lots of our favourite foods – which for us included sweets! That’s when it hit us, we have everything in place to set up a second food business and as more and more people are changing the way they shop, it made perfect sense to expand into something new. Retro pick and mix, done well.”

Bonita added: “Even though more people now have chilli jam as a cupboard ingredient, it’s still a fairly niche market. The sweet market is a completely different area – everyone has their favourite retro pick and mix. Candy Mouth allows us to sell to a larger market place while still maintaining our small business ethos. Setting up this new side to our business has been great fun – we’ve especially the research!”

Candy Mouth is being launched to coincide with York Food Festival which takes place across Parliament Street and the shambles Market this weekend.  The popular festival will have a slightly different look this year to make the event Covid safe but will still feature a Yorkshire food market as well as demonstrations, tasting areas and a City Taste Trail.

Simon continues: “It seemed like the perfect opportunity to tell people about our new venture. We’re so pleased to be back in York after such a strange few months and now we’re working on both sides of the taste spectrum – savoury and sweet – we’re looking forward to seeing what the future holds.”

The Candy Mouth range will be available to buy online at www.candymouth.co.uk with the personalised jars also available at Not On The High Street.
