Yorkshire bakery creates posh pie to mark Queen’s 90th

THE Queen’s 90th birthday has been marked with pomp, pageantry and…. a posh pie from one Yorkshire family bakery.

Doncaster-based The Topping Pie Company baked a special ‘Queen’s Pie’ for Her Majesty The Queen this week, which was delivered to the Royal Chef at Windsor Castle on Wednesday, ahead of the monarch’s actual birthday on Thursday 21 April.

QueenspiesmallDeveloped from an original recipe by Maggie Topping who took inspiration from Victorian pies, the delicious 2.2kg Queen’s Pie included a 3-layer combination teaming British Red Tractor pork meat with duck and guinea fowl, mandarin orange segments, juice, orange curd, Cointreau and stuffing for a truly royal taste!

Roger Topping, managing director, The Topping Pie Company commented: “We decided to celebrate our monarch’s special birthday by baking a pie to an original recipe created by my wife, Maggie, whose love of home baking really changed the landscape of our business.  We are delighted to be given permission to deliver it to The Queen’s Chef for her to enjoy.”

The Topping family are no strangers to Royal attention, when three generations welcomed The Princess Royal to the new bakery in 2008 during a tour of Doncaster.  As part of her visit, The Princess Royal tasted award winning pies and unveiled a commemorative plaque.

The Topping Pie Company diversified from a small family butchers shop founded in 1961 to become a multi-award winning speciality pie business supplying a wide range of handcrafted products to retail, independents, wholesale and export customers – but it still retains its traditional family roots and the original Doncaster market butchers shop.

Limited Edition versions of the Queen’s Pie will also go on sale for the general public at the Topping Pie outlets in Doncaster market and the Frenchgate Shopping Centre, as well as at Selfridges, Oxford Street and Fenwicks Food Hall in Newcastle.
