Thomas the Baker customers will help hundreds of people with cancer get nursing care in their homes after the family bakery presented a cheque for £10,000 to Macmillan Cancer Support last week ““ the biggest amount the bakery has ever raised for charity!
Thomas the Baker handed over the whopping sum to Macmillan at a special cheque presentation on October 25, which had been raised through sponsored walks and supplier contributions. But more than half the total ““ some £6,500 ““ had been donated by customers through collection boxes at its 34 shops.
John Thomas, managing director at Thomas the Baker, who presented the cheque to the charity, said: “Last year, we raised £7,000 for charity but this year we’re absolutely delighted to have exceeded expectations! Each year we put out a call to our staff to see which charity they’d like to support and this year they were overwhelming in favour of Macmillan. We’ve just had a member of staff return after having cancer treatment and you realise it’s something that touches everyone’s lives.”
“We’d like to say a big thank you to our customers who kindly donated so much of their spare change,” added Johns. “Without them we wouldn’t have reached such as significant total. We hope they can support us again next year in beating our record £10,000 total!”
Sally Millington, fundraising manager for Macmillan, who accepted the cheque on behalf of Macmillan, said: “I couldn’t believe it when the staff at Thomas the Baker told me how much they had raised. Everyone has been so generous in helping to raise such a magnificent amount.
“There are over 2 million people living with cancer in the UK. 1 in 3 people will receive a cancer diagnosis and it costs £191 to fund a Macmillan nurse for a day. This wonderful amount of money will allow us to reach so many more people who need support. We rely on donations for 98% of our income to fund our services so you know that every penny of this really will make a difference.”
