Yorkshire pie-maker on the hunt for ‘best pork pie accompaniment’

A Yorkshire pork pie brand are launching a nationwide search for the UK’s favourite pork pie condiment.

Vale of Mowbray, based at Leeming bar near Bedale, launched their ‘Condiment World Cup’ earlier this week, with daily public votes on social media culminating in one product being crowned the champion of the people.

Vale of Mowbray’s Marketing Manager, Jason Crowe said: “We’re passionate about pork pies being the ‘food of the people’ and would love to know what their favourite condiment is to enjoy with them.

“By creating the Condiment World Cup, we’re giving the public the opportunity to champion producers of any size and also introduce our followers to brands and products that they might not have come across previously.

“The line-up features a combination of household names and lesser-known independent brands, all of whom stand to benefit from daily exposure to our follower base as we hunt for the overall winner.

“Featuring the ‘talents’ of pundit Alex D’Spoon [I lick the spoon] with support of industry ‘expert’ Kris P Krust, we’re set for three weeks of tasty fun.”

First established in 1795 as a brewery, Vale of Mowbray started baking pies in 1928 and was bought by current owners, the Gatenby family in the 1990’s, with the North Yorkshire company now producing over 80 million pies every year.

Made to traditional recipes, using the freshest ingredients, their expanding range incudes classic hot water pastry pies filled with tender, cured pork seasoned with a blend of herbs and spices and can be found in national retailers as well as in many independents, farm shops and delis.

The new three-week campaign will see various ‘play offs’ between products and will give the public the opportunity to vote via social media to determine the final champion.

Mark Gatenby, Managing Director at Vale of Mowbray said: “As a family-owned business we want to support as many independent producers as we can, and so we’re looking forward to using our own social media platforms to showcase some of the incredible condiments the UK has to offer.

“We would love to see a collaboration as a result of the final verdict, perhaps a new recipe for a pie or a gift pack of some sort – but along the way we’re looking forward to seeing some fantastic products given the limelight they deserve.”
