East Yorkshire brewery’s success in World Gluten Free Beer Awards

The team at a Wold Newton based brewery are celebrating after picking up an international award for their gluten free beers.

Alex and Kate Balchin from Wold Top Brewery recently attended the Beer Attraction exhibition in Rimini, Italy and were delighted to bring home the award for their Marmalade Porter, one of the firm’s three gluten free beers.

The porter, with an ABV of 5%, was awarded third prize in the low and high fermentation – low alcohol content (<5.5%) category at the fifth World Gluten Free Beer Awards.

Brewery manager Alex Balchin said: “It’s great to see our Yorkshire beer achieving success on a worldwide gluten free platform.

“The competition judged 46 beers from eight countries, so we were delighted that Marmalade Porter not only won a prize, but was one of only two UK beers to be awarded prizes across the three categories.”

Marmalade Porter is a complex and rich dark brew with a sweet malty base. It is described as having overtones of bitter orange and hints of coffee and chocolate.

In 2017, Marmalade Porter also won United Kingdom’s best Porter at the World Beer Awards and won the gold medal in the Porters, Stouts, Old Ales, Strong Milds and Strong Brown Ales 4.5% to 6.4% category at the North East Regional Keg Heats of the SIBA Independent Keg Beer Awards 2017.
