Three East Yorkshire businesses are celebrating after being shortlisted in the Great British Food Awards.
Tibthorpe based The Yorkshire Wagyu Company is in the running in both the best fresh meat product and best savoury snack categories for its sirloin steak and paleo sliced original biltong respectively.
Meanwhile, Middleton-on-the-Wolds poultry specialists T.Soanes & Son has also reached the best fresh meat product shortlist for its free range chicken and Wold Top Brewery’s Scarborough Fair IPA has made it to the best craft beer shortlist.
The Great British Food Awards were launched in 2014 by the eponymous magazine to celebrate the country’s finest home-grown ingredients, producers and those who cook with them. New categories have been added for this year to take the total to 20 across meat, dairy, fish, confectionery, baked products, snacks, gluten-free products, cereal, preserves, oils, beer, cider and gin.
For the Yorkshire Wagyu Company, a double nomination comes as a welcome surprise for the business which only launched its new biltong earlier this year.
Co-founder Jonathan Shepherd, said: “We’ve worked hard to grow the Yorkshire Wagyu brand and knowing that our meat has been recognised in its raw steak form and as a cured product is a real honour.”
T.Soanes & Son’s General Manager, Nigel Upson is equally delighted with the news of the shortlist: “We are extremely proud to have reached this stage of a renowned national food competition with our free range chicken that is reared just a few miles away from the factory.”
The shortlisted products are being taste tested further by some of the top names in the food and drink industry with winners to be announced in the October edition of the Great British Food magazine, out September 8.
