Herb Fed Poultry is among the Great Taste winners of 2019

A North Yorkshire poultry firm are celebrating after being awarded a hattrick of stars at the recent Great Taste Awards.

Herb Fed Poultry, based at Pilmoor near York were awarded a star each for their Herb Fed free range bronze turkey, Herb Fed free range chicken and Herb Fed free range Rooster.

Known as the Oscars of the food and drink industry, the awards received nearly 13,000 entries this year from over 100 different countries and were whittled down by a team of expert judging including chefs, buyer, critics and food writers.

The judges described Herb Fed’s free range bronze turkey as “beautifully presented and bronzed. The leg meat is melt-in-the-mouth while the breast is moist but heavier, with perfectly crispy skin packed with flavour.”  Whilst of the Free Range Rooster the judges said “This cooks to a great golden colour, with alluring aromas, and the juices and skin have savoury depth. The breast meat is moist and firm and both brown and white meat have a rich, satisfying old-fashioned chicken flavour. A chicken that has been given time to fulfil its potential.”

Great Taste is widely acknowledged as the most respected food accreditation scheme for artisan and speciality food producers and the unmistakeable black and gold Great Taste label is a well known badge of honour, and a signpost to a wonderful tasting product, which has been discovered through hours and hours of blind tasting by hundreds of judges.

Herb Fed’s founder Edward Wilkinson said: “We are delighted that all three of our birds have been awarded this year. It’s amazing and really means a lot to the whole team who work hard to look after the flocks.  It’s a great achievement showing happy healthy birds taste better. This year’s three awards, together with our previous 4 mean that Herb Fed is now a Great Taste Producer – a wonderful badge of honour.”
