Jervaulx launch recipe book

A family run tea room are celebrating 25 years of making delicious cakes with the launch of their first cook book.

In Their Footsteps, which will be available to buy from 15th October, shares a collection of irresistible bakes and relishes from the Burdon family, owners of the historic Jervaulx Abbey near Leyburn and its award winning tearoom.

Featuring over 50 recipes from flapjack to piccalilli, including a range of dairy-free, gluten-free and vegan puddings and cakes, the book brings together a range of old favourites and contemporary creations, as well as providing plenty of inspiration for creating fabulous finishes on cakes using icings, sauces and even edible flowers.

The collection of recipes have been developed by the family over the years, using ingredients sourced from many local producers. The bakes and relishes are perfect for keen home cooks and beginners, traditionalists and adventurers, gluten intolerants and vegans; part of the Burdon ethos is to provide everyone with something to enjoy.

The Burdon family which includes mum and dad, Ian and Carol along with daughters Gayle and Anna will officially launch the book at an event in the tea room and around the Abbey on the 18th October which will see friends and local businesses gather to mark the launch of the book and celebrate the tea rooms 25th anniversary.

Anna Burdon said: “We’re fulfilling a dream that Mum started through her amazing home baking, so it just seemed really fitting to produce a recipe book celebrating the fact that our tearoom has been going for 25 years.

“We all work just as hard for each other as we do for our customers, and it’s a real privilege to preserve our beautiful abbey by indulging in our love of good food together.”

The title of the book is a reference to the Burdon’s long-ago predecessors at Jervaulx Abbey, the Cistercian monks who would have made and sold local produce to support their home in much the same way that the family do today. Now readers can tread the same path in their own home, recreating the tearoom’s own Wensleydale Beer and Apple Chutney, made with the eponymous local brew, or the award-winning free-from Raspberry and Almond Cake amongst many others.

In Their Footsteps is available in paperback and retails at £15. It will be available to purchase from the Jervaulx Abbey Tearoom and online from www.jervaulxabbey.com, Amazon and www.mezepublishing.co.uk as well as in book shops including Waterstones.  For further information email jervaulx.abbey@hotmail.co.uk
