Pumpkin Oil and Balsamic Syrup make their ice cream debut in new Yummy Yorkshire Bonfire Night flavours

Huddersfield ice cream producer Yummy Yorkshire has unveiled two innovative new autumn winter flavours made with ingredients normally found in salad as opposed to ice cream; pumpkin seed oil and balsamic syrup.

The artisan ice cream producer has created a Pumpkin Seed Oil ice cream in collaboration with fellow Yorkshire business Pumpkin Oil as well as a Spicy Pear ice cream featuring a Vanilla Balsamic Syrup.

The Pumpkin Seed Oil flavour, which is bright green in colour and has a slightly nutty taste, is made with 100% extra virgin, cold-pressed pumpkin oil, that is produced from seeds of the Styrian Pumpkin.

Sheffield based Pumpkin Oil produces the oil in a wine-growing region in Slovenia, where the seeds are dry-roasted, milled and pressed before being bottled in the UK and shipped to some of Europe’s finest delicatessens including Fortnum and Mason in London and La Grand Epicerie of Paris.

According to owner of Pumpkin Oil, Gary Hutton, the oil is delicious drizzled over vanilla ice cream so to marry the two to create an ice cream flavour was an instinctive progression.

Yummy Yorkshire’s new Spicy Pear ice cream is made with locally grown stewed pears and spices including cinnamon. A Vanilla Balsamic Syrup from fine food retailer Atkins & Potts, who Yummy Yorkshire met at the Speciality Food Fair this year gives the pear a stimulating boost.

Both flavours will be launched in time for Bonfire Night at Yummy Yorkshire’s ice cream parlour and café and will also be available in catering sizes for the specialist deli/retail, catering and foodservice markets.

Louise Holmes, co-founder of Yummy Yorkshire and responsible for the development of new flavours says: “Yummy Yorkshire is all about culinary exploration, we try and break the boundaries a little, fusing flavour combinations to create unusual, yet delicious new ice cream flavours.

“We are also a champion of Yorkshire produce and try to support other local producers where possible so we were delighted when Gary approached us about working together. The resulting flavour is not only eye-catching but captures the distinctive nutty taste of the pumpkin seeds perfectly.”

“The Spicy Pear ice cream was born out of a development day when we were creating new flavours for the winter period. Pears are in season now so we were keen to use them but with an added twist. We tried the balsamic syrup as a trial and loved the results. The combination is wonderful; it’s the perfect addition to our festive flavours.”

Gary Hutton of Pumpkin Oil adds: “We know how well pumpkin oil goes with vanilla ice cream so we had been looking for a suitable local, artisan ice cream maker for some time to work with to come up with something special. As soon as we discovered Yummy Yorkshire, with their innovative flavours and use of natural ingredients we could hardly contain our excitement. We emailed Louise who replied immediately, she was just as excited as we were.

“The taste and colour of the Pumpkin Oil ice cream we have tasted with Louise was amazing – we know it will be a big hit! We are really pleased and excited to be working with Yummy Yorkshire and can’t wait for the launch of Pumpkin Oil ice cream into Yorkshire and beyond!”
