Yorkshire Wolds businesses collaborate to create unique beer

Two sibling businesses from the Yorkshire coast have collaborated to launch a third barrel-aged beer.

Wold Top Brewery and sister company, Spirit of Yorkshire Distillery have launched Crest, a limited-edition lager that has been matured for over a year in casks that had previously contained Filey Bay Flagship whisky from Yorkshire’s first single malt whisky distillery.

Wold Top’s Brewery Manager, Alex Balchin said: “The lightness of Landmark lager, with its notes of honey and fresh herbs, is a perfect match for the smooth and creamy vanilla notes from the Filey Bay Flagship casks and creates a delicious, fresh tasting beer with aromas of green apples and a gentle, warming flavour.

“At 7.9% abv, this is a very easy drinking barrel aged beer, ideal for late summer evenings enjoyed with friends round the fire pit.”

Gluten free and suitable for vegans, Crest is a limited edition run with 6,000 330ml bottles available to buy online from woldtopbrewery.co.uk, from the shop at Spirit of Yorkshire Distillery and independent retailers whilst stocks last.

The Wold Newton based brewery are also celebrating after recently winning a silver medal at the 15th annual Free From Food Awards.

Wold Top’s Scarborough Fair IPA was one of just two silver medal winners in the Gluten-Free category of the awards that attracted over 500 entries in a range of classes, with their Marmalade Porter also named as a finalist in the same category with the judging panel describing the English style triple hopped IPA as: ‘A lovely, light-coloured IPA that’s well balanced and delivers throughout. It has a gentle, green and piney hop aroma, and a soft, lingering bitterness.”

Founded by in 2003 Wold Top Brewery is run by the Mellor family from their farm at Hunmanby Grange near Filey. The team use home grown barley and water from the farm’s own borehole to produce a range of award-winning cask, keg and bottled beers that are available nationwide.
