Yorkshire Wolds brewery founder wins award for entrepreneurial spirit

The team at a Yorkshire Wolds brewery is celebrating after its co-founder won a prestigious award at the Hull Daily Mail Business Awards.

Tom Mellor beat stiff competition from GW Power’s Daniel Haley to be announced the Entrepreneur of the Year at the awards ceremony at KCOM Stadium. Sponsored by Sewell Group, the award recognises an individual who has had a profound effect on both business and the local community.

Tom Mellor, of Wold Newton based T.Mellor and Son, took over the family farm in 1981, expanded the acreage and introduced new crops before researching other ventures to increase income. He took his first steps into diversification at the beginning of the 2000s when he established Wold Top Brewery on the 600 acre farm site with wife, Gill. Further diversification businesses followed, with Agricola Bottling in 2010, Muddy Souls Events in 2013 and Spirit of Yorkshire in 2016.

Now in its 17th year, The Hull Daily Mail Business Awards celebrates the success of individuals, businesses and organisations based in the region across a number of categories.

Farm-based Wold Top Brewery brews award winning beer ale from home and Wolds grown malting barley, hops and pure, chalk-filtered Wolds water. Its beer is available through the Wold Top website, independent and multiple retailers, farm shops, delis, hotels, pubs and off licences throughout Yorkshire and Lincolnshire.
